Every pet has unique characteristics, and by understanding their actions, behaviors, and expressions, it’s possible to uncover important aspects of their personality, which contributes to a more enriching and comprehensive relationship between them and their owners.
“Observing the behavior of dogs and cats when they are alone helps us understand them better. This can help the owner identify signs of anxiety, such as excessive barking, or even health problems. Additionally, it allows for adjustments to the routine and the provision of appropriate stimuli, such as interactive toys and enriching activities,” comments Thiago Teixeira, the general manager of Nouvet, a high-level veterinary center in São Paulo.
In the case of dogs, when they feel comfortable and free from the owner’s presence, they can exhibit a variety of behaviors. Some become more independent, exploring the environment with curiosity, playing, or seeking new places to rest. Others may show signs of separation anxiety, revealing more sensitive and cautious aspects of their individuality. They may seek comfort in objects, areas that remind them of the absent owner, display repetitive behaviors such as excessive barking, or engage in destructive chewing.
As for cats, in the absence of the owner, they become masters of their own territory, exploring every nook and cranny with a curious and fearless attitude. They may seek high places to observe the environment or bask in the sun’s rays through the windows. Their personality is evident in interactions with other furry household pets. Some become territorial leaders, demonstrating confidence in their relationship with the other furry companions.
When caring for an animal, it is crucial to consider their preferences and dislikes. For example, a dog that enjoys outdoor play will be more lively and sociable, while a cat that prefers high places will have a calmer and more observant personality. It is also important to note sleep and activity patterns, as more energetic animals tend to be extroverted and exploratory, while calmer ones prefer rest and observation.
“The key to discovering a dog’s or cat’s personality is patience and observation of their interactions, behaviors, and preferences. Each animal is unique, and by understanding them, the owner can provide a more suitable and rewarding environment for them, even in their absence,” Teixeira adds.
Environments that respect the behaviors of pets are essential to ensure their well-being and offer a humane treatment for them. In fact, Nouvet has its own school for dogs of all sizes and ages, providing comfort, safety, and learning. The Nouvet School focuses on recreation and behavior correction, as well as offering activities rich in cognitive and physical stimuli, respecting each friend’s individuality.
